A strengths-based approach is essential for creating an exceptional workplace culture. That's why more than 90% of the Fortune 500 companies use CliftonStrengths.

You don’t have to be good at everything, but your team does

Ironically, leaders that try to be good at everything become the least effective overall.  Let’s face it – it can be really exhausting trying to be all things to all people.

Authentic leaders know their own strengths and weaknesses.  They stay true to who they are and surround themselves with people that complement their strengths and fill in the gaps.

You need to know what you bring to the table and how your strengths contribute to your work team. Your team members should be in the right roles that “fit” their strengths.  You should know where the gaps are so you can hire properly in the future.

More than 19 million people have taken the Clifton StrengthsFinder 2.0 assessment. But most leaders do not get the full value of this powerful tool if they do not have the necessary training and coaching to accompany it. Strengths-Based Teams is a dynamic 3-month program that takes strengths to the next level.

capitalize on each team member’s individual strengths

negotiate member roles to promote mastery of strengths

enhance team leadership skills to maximize engagement

This transformational team-building program includes:
  • Clifton StrengthsFinder 2.0 assessment for each team member
  • 3 one-on-one coaching sessions for Team Leader
  • 30-page workbook for each team member
  • 3 team-building interactive exercises
  • 2 individual reflection assignments
  • Team leader Action Plan
  • 3 months of unlimited guided support
  • Pre- and Post-engagement measure to assess ROI

The best managers boost team performance using CliftonStrengths. In fact, 7 in 10 employees who say their managers are focused on their strengths are more engaged.

The CliftonStrengths assessment is essential for empowering people to achieve their goals and accomplish great things. People who use their CliftonStrengths are:

  • 6x more likely to be engaged at work
  • 7.8% more productive in their role
  • 3x more likely to have an excellent quality of life

Until people know what makes them talented and unique, they can’t perform to their full potential in their job. Or find one that’s a better fit.

I know many senior leaders believe team-building is a waste of time. And it’s true, superficial programs are a waste of time. Some of the most popular examples include ropes courses, cooking classes, escape rooms, and white-water rafting. It’s easy to see why some leaders have gotten cynical.

The problem with these approaches are that they are just fun activities that allow team members to get away from their “real job” for a few hours. They don’t fundamentally alter the way the team operates when they go back to work. There is no understanding of how the team is currently functioning and no direction for ongoing future development. Team-building must be a continuous process, not a single event.

Here's How It Works

Step 1: Identify Strengths

Don’t assume that employees know their strengths. People often take their most powerful talents for granted. Each team member will take the CliftonStrengths 2.0 assessment. Meet with team members to discuss how they—and you—see their core competencies and strengths. Included in this module:

  • Overview of Strengths Science (video)
  • Individual Reflection Assignment
  • Team-building Exercise #1

Step 2: Evaluate Team Strengths

Help your team understand each other’s strengths and how these talents unite to create a powerful picture and improve teamwork skills. Suggest how the team might take advantage of each members’ strengths, and hear what the team has to say. And why stop there? Look beyond your projects to the wider organization to see whether demonstrated strengths can be used in neglected areas of the broader business. Included in this module:

  • Four Strength Domains
  • Team-Building Exercise #2
  • Fill in the Gaps

Step 3: Coach and Develop

Instead of waiting for team members to come to you, approach them one-on-one. Let them know what qualities you see in them, and make sure that they’re willing to build on their strengths. You would never intentionally assign tasks based on weaknesses, but you might overlook strengths unless they’re surfaced. Guide them in a specific type of career path by sending them to a course or training program. Included in this module:

  • Strengths-Based Leadership Strategies
  • Strengths Application
  • Individual Reflection Assignment
  • 1:1 Coaching with Each Team Member
  • Leader Action Plan

Step 4: Negotiate Roles

Help employees align their strengths with the expectations and responsibilities of their roles. In the best case scenario, team members’ strengths should align with roles; but sometimes things go a little off course. Let your team members decide whether to pursue certain activities, even if it means shuffling tasks on a project. Make sure you nurture and guide individuals to focus on their core strengths and then give them responsibilities that align with their talents. Included in this module:

  • Team-Building Exercise #3
  • Role Negotiation
  • Role Negotiation Exercise

Step 5: Maximize Engagement

Learn how to incorporate strengths into performance conversations and reviews. Help employees set goals based on their core competencies and strengths. Open career growth conversations or offer training opportunities for employees who show strength in particular areas. Tell team members that if they have a strength they’d like to develop, you’re willing to support them. This encouragement may motivate employees to actively discover their strengths and do what they need to develop their professional skills. Included in this module:

  • Strengths-Based Leadership Strategies
  • Engagement Survey
