Leadership Legacy Toolkit

Every leader hopes to leave a leadership legacy: an enduring and lasting mark on the world.

The way that people think, behave, and approach life as a result of having worked with you is your leadership legacy. It has little to do with your abilities, your performance, your strategic vision, or your political savvy. It has everything to do with who you are, as a person, at work.

Leaving a legacy means investing in people, not numbers. You likely won’t be remembered long for your results as a leader, because next year there’s always a higher goal to reach – whether you’re there or not. But your positive impact can ripple far beyond your tenure when you connect, develop, and inspire people.

The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership.

Harvey Firestone

From Success to Significance

The leadership legacy journey shifts your focus from success to significance. It requires you to lead with long-term values rather than short-term results. Significance values quality more than quantity.

Significance is not measured by how many people in the world have heard of you. It doesn’t matter how many followers you have on social media. It doesn’t depend on which targets you have hit. Instead, it is measured by how the people closest to you have benefited from your impact. Your significance is measured by the consequences of your everyday choices and actions. It’s a lasting impression in the minds and hearts of people who know you well.

Success is almost always a selfish pursuit, while significance is typically gained through selfless service. We create success through “advancement” activities such as education, credentialing, networking, and striving for a track record of effectiveness. We create significance by stepping in and filling someone else’s need – investing in the success of others, helping others to advance, and giving others the opportunity for visibility. Compared to significance, the bright lights of success fade quickly.

This is a mindset shift, and one that can create some insecurity and uncertainty at first. But just like others did for you, it is important to pursue this type of significance as you mature in your leadership. It can also be very rewarding as it sets you free from the constant pressure to get ahead. Holding on too long to position, power, or status usually results in a poor finish – both professionally and personally.

It doesn’t matter where you are working now; you have the power to create significance. Since you are going to spend more hours at work than anywhere else, the workplace is actually the best place for you to seek significance. You can start by asking the question, “How can I make things better around here?”

The primary purpose of leadership is to make things better for others. When you live by this definition, you are leading with legacy in mind.

A leadership legacy is not something that happens overnight. It is a slow and steady process built on incremental and intentional changes. If you’re not happy with what you perceive your leadership legacy to be, you can start taking steps today to change it.

A leadership legacy is not carved in stone. It is never too late to reinvent yourself, to reevaluate, and take small steps toward change.

A leadership legacy, on the other hand, cannot wait. The decisions you make in your career now will stay with you the rest of your life.

Leadership Legacy Toolkit

The purpose of this coaching intensive is to provide you with the right tools to build a strong leadership legacy. This toolkit provides strategies that are proven to result in extraordinarily higher engagement and significant performance improvement in organizations, by motivating, developing, and inspiring a future generation of leaders. It focuses on a few simple strategies that can change everything.

What’s Included

The Leadership Legacy Toolkit includes three resource guides: (1) A Leader’s Guide to Powerful and Effective Delegation, (2) A Leader’s Guide to Effective 1:1 Meetings, and (3) A Leader’s Guide to Establishing Your Talent Pipeline.

Each resource guide provides research-based evidence for success, identifies specific actionable steps to improve engagement and performance, and fosters meaningful relationships that result in a lasting leadership legacy.

Here’s what you’ll discover inside the course:

How to Delegate with Clarity and Confidence

Legacy leaders create an environment where team performance can flourish through powerful and effective delegation, and they do so by:

  • Outlining clear expectations
  • Ensuring the right person-job fit
  • Making resources available for people to perform their jobs
  • Developing ownership and accountability in each team member
  • Connecting tasks to the bigger picture
  • Empowering autonomous decision-making
  • Utilizing the individual talents of everyone on the team

In this module, you will learn why delegation is necessary, the signs you are not delegating enough, the top ten reasons leaders don’t delegate (and how to overcome them), exactly what to delegate (and to whom), the five levels of delegation, and a strategy for tracking progress.

How to Coach and Develop Your Team

Legacy leaders rely on effective 1:1 meetings with their direct reports to maximize engagement and performance, and they do so by:

  • Setting organizational boundaries that enable high performance
  • Creating a clear vision of where the company needs to go (and why)
  • Making themselves available for career development conversations
  • Prioritizing people over results
  • Paying attention to your words, body language, and tone when speaking to your team
  • Giving and receiving feedback
  • Increasing alignment, improving collaboration, and strengthening relationships

In this module, you will learn what to talk about in career development conversations, exactly what questions to ask, how to give and receive feedback appropriately, how to save time by keeping these meetings on your schedule, 5 keys to making these meetings count, and a method for tracking progress.

How to Identify and Nurture Your Top Talent

Legacy leaders build a strong “bench” of talent below them, so that confident emerging leaders are ready to perform at a moment’s notice. They accomplish this by:

  • Identifying and training high-potential workers for advancement into key roles
  • Ensuring that critical skills are passed on to the next generation of workers
  • Evaluating the organization’s current talent pool and identifying potential future leaders
  • Sharing meaningful feedback and not letting unresolved problems linger
  • Setting improvement targets for low performers and holding them to it
  • Creating opportunities for all team members to stretch and grow

In this module, you will discover the importance of succession planning, how to assess talent readiness, be able to quantitively evaluate leadership potential, implement the 9-box grid for identifying high potentials, and develop potential across all levels of talent (A, B, and C players).
